The Ebonyi State University Abakaliki (EBSU) was originally founded as a campus of Anambra State of Science and Technology (ASUTECH). When Enugu state was created out of the former Anambra State in 1991, it still retained its status as a campus of Enugu State University Science and Technology (ESUT), following the creation of Ebonyi State reached an agreement to constitute the Abakaliki campus into a University college.
The law establishing the Ebonyi Stale University was signed by Dr. Sam Egwu the first Executive Governor of the State on 23 December 1999. Presently, Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has eight faculties in addition to postgraduate School, pre-Degree School (PDS) and work and study unit. The faculty of academic year at the lshieke Annex of the University. The faculty of Education came into being in 1999/2000 academic year at the lshieke Annex of the University. The faculty started with six Departments with various degree programmes, Home Economics was merged with technical and Vocation Education (WE) in 2000/2002. Thereafter in 2005, during first NUC Accreditation panel visitation of Faculty of Education the NUC because of the outstanding performance of the Home Economics program recommended that the program should be de-emerged from the Department thereby increasing the Departments to seven with relevant programme options namely:
1. Arts and Social Science Education
2. Business Education
3. Educational Foundations
4. Human Kinetics and Health Education
5. Science and Computer Education
6. Technical and vocational Education
7. Home Economics respectively.
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
The faculty derives its philosophy and objectives from the overall National
Policy on Education.
- A free and democratic society.
- A free and egalitarian society.
- A united, strong and self-reliant nation.
- A great and dynamic economy. A land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens. The goal of the faculty is equally related to section (5) of National policy of Education.
They are as follows:
-The acquisition, development and inculcation of value-orientation for the survival of the individual and society
– The development of the intellectual capacities of individual to understand and appreciate their environment.
– The acquisition of both physical and intellectual skills which will enable individual to develop into useful members of the community. The acquisition of an objective view of the local and external environment.
To help realize these objectives the faculty programmes are designed to achieve the following:
A. Produce highly motivated conscientious efficient classroom teacher for all levels of our education.
B. Encourage further, the spirit of enquiry and creativity in teachers.
C. Help teachers to fit into the social life of the community and society at large and enhance their commitment to national objectives.
D. Provide teachers with the intellectual and professional background adequate for their assignment and to make them acceptable to any changing situation not only in the life country but in the wider world.
E. Enhance teacher’s commitment to the teaching profession.
The philosophy and objectives of the seven Departments are based on the philosophy of the Faculty.
